What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo originated in Korea and is the world’s most modern and popular martial art and method of self-defense. It is characterized by its fast, high and spinning kicks. But Taekwondo is more than just kicks; it is a lifestyle of physical and mental training and challenges that encourage an individual to strive to meet new goals. It develops the student’s complete being, mentally and physically, together with an indomitable spirit.
Taekwondo is often translated as “the way of hand and foot.”
TAE means “to jump or strike with the foot.”
KWON means “to block or strike with the hand.”
DO means “the art or method, with proper mental attitude and spirit.”
Taekwondo’s four main disciplines of practice and demonstration are a major part of the curriculum at Ahn’s Taekwondo:
- Forms
- Sparring
- Self-defense
- Breaking

Taekwondo Compared to Other Sports
Everyone is a winner at Ahn’s Taekwondo. Every student at Ahn’s is treated as an individual and receives personal encouragement from our Masters to perform to the best of their ability and potential. Regardless of athletic ability, all students start at the same level then progress at their own pace to achieve their personal goals.
Too often, team sports such as soccer, baseball, basketball and football promote competitiveness and winning above all else. Too often, only the best athletes get to play. Ahn’s students NEVER SIT ON THE BENCH. Ahn’s students are never compared to anyone else.
In other sports, girls and boys rarely if ever train and compete together, giving girls the belief that they are “second best.” At Ahn’s, girls and boys, women and men, train and compete together. Everyone comes in first!
